Susan Melinda Reid, 61, of Traverse City passed away Saturday, October 4, 2025 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
Susan was born on September 26, 1964, to James and Emma (Smith) Lee in Waycross, Georgia, and was raised in Bainbridge, Georgia. She was a vibrant soul known for her passion for life and her incredible strength. Her family would tell folks that she had some cat dna, because she had survived at least 9 lives. Her battles with diabetes, cancer, heart disease and strokes eventually became too much, but she did give a good fight.
In 1986 Susan met and fell in love with Joseph Robert Reid at a country and western bar in Grand Rapids. Afterward, they moved to Traverse City, Michigan, where they were married in the beautiful town of Leland, sharing 39 wonderful years. Together, they had a son, Justin Reid, who brought her immeasurable joy. Susan also helped raise two daughters of Joe's, Crystal and Kelly, whom she loved dearly.
In her younger days, Susan played basketball in high school and college. However her passionate sport was bowling, as she became a semi-pro bowler throughout the southeastern United States. Another activity she enjoyed in her younger years was to mc rodeos. She always brought joy and excitement to everyone around her.
In her career, Susan spent many years working in retail, selling clothing and jewelry. She also worked several years as a teacher's assistant, where she had a positive impact on many students lives.
One of Susan's greatest joys was playing the piano in church, where she loved to sing along, filling the space with her beautiful voice. As a couple, they shared the love for traveling, camping, and fishing, making many cherished memories together. Together they also enjoyed competing in bass fishing tournaments where they shared the thrill of the sport. She also had a deep love for playing Texas Hold'em. She truly enjoyed the competition and camaraderie that this card game would give her among friends.
Her last several years were spent in a nursing home, where she was cared for with great love. She did enjoy getting out and about in her wheelchair exploring the city limits when her health allowed.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Lee, who passed away a few years ago. And she is survived by her father James Lee and her sister Pam Lee. Both her parents and sister were a constant source of love and support in Susan's life.
Despite facing many health challenges, including diabetes and the effects of multiple strokes, a heart attack, and cancer, she faced them with unmatched courage and grace. Her resilience and love for life inspired all who knew her.
Susan will be remembered for her unwavering strength and the profound love she shared with her family and friends. A memorial service is yet to be scheduled.
