TRAVERSE CITY — Suzanne Oakes Buck joined her husband, Vincent, in everlasting life on Jan. 2, 2011, in Traverse City, where in her final hours she was surrounded with love, her family and friends.A native of Ypsilanti, Suzanne graduated from Ypsilanti High School, was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps and spent many hours with Marjorie Randazzo dancing both in Michigan and New York City. They remained life-long friends and continued their love of ballet with Dance Arts Academy and Diva Dancewear of Traverse City.A member since birth of the First Presbyterian Church of Ypsilanti, Suzanne sang in the choir throughout her life and encouraged her sons to do the same (one of her few failures). God blessed her with a beautiful soprano voice and she often shared the story of how Phyllis Diller was her voice coach during the war years in Ypsilanti. She continued her singing with the Presbyterian Church of Traverse City and was thankful for the fellowship.Suzanne married Vincent after World War II and raised four children, tirelessly committing herself to their growth and education. In addition to raising her children, she ran Buck Realty and Property Management and served the City of Ypsilanti with membership in the Prospect Elementary School PTA, YHS Drum and Bugle Corps alumni and Ladies Literary Club. Many will remember her as their first ballet teacher and her association with the Randazzo Dance Studio. She continued with this commitment to family as her children married and created their families. She attended many sporting, dance and academic events and vacations with her grandchildren, and just told everyone to call her Grandma. She was there for baptisms, weddings, and when life became challenging, with unconditional love.Suzanne is survived by sons, Gregory (Jean), of Ann Arbor, Patrick (Jane), of Traverse City, Michael (Sharon), of Brighton; daughter, Sue, of Traverse City; sister, Catherine Newcomb, of Brighton; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Saines, of Pinckney, Gladys Buck, of Whitmore Lake, Lenny Oakes, of Ypsilanti; brothers-in-law, Gordon Hoyt and Bud Davis, of Anchorage, Alaska, and Bill Buck of Tecumseh; grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.She was preceded in physical death by her husband, Vincent; parents, Laura and Warren Oakes; and brother, Warren.The family will receive friends Wednesday, Jan. 5, from 4 to 9 p.m., with a service led by Becky Chamberlain at 7:30 p.m., at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.The family will also receive friends Sunday, Jan. 9, at First Presbyterian Church, 300 North Washington, Ypsilanti, from noon until the time of funeral services at 1 p.m.Memorial contributions may be directed to the Scholarship Fund for Dance created in Suzanne's honor at the Dance Arts Academy.
