Obituary

Thomas MacNeill Barnhart, 83, of Traverse City, died on Tuesday morning, Dec. 10, 2019 at North Star Assisted Living. Tom, the eldest of three, was born at Harper Hospital in Detroit on Oct. 17, 1936 to Joseph Densil Barnhart and Mae MacNeill. He attended Wayne State University and received his bachelor's degree in political science.

He married Leona Mae Wiest in 1960. They had three children, Tom, Terry and LeAnne. The family moved to Traverse City in 1971. He taught special education at Kalkaska High School, retiring after 22 years. He enjoyed sports, both as a participant and as a coach for his children. He had a terrific speaking voice, and served as the announcer for Kalkaska high school sports and was the stadium announcer for the Traverse City Bays hockey team.

Tom was an avid lover of dogs, especially Samoyed huskies. His hobbies included computers, genealogy, skiing and motorcycle riding. He lived in Traverse City for 48 years and was a board member and president of the TBA Credit Union for 26 years.

Tom was active in the Kalkaska Education Association and served as its president for many years. He was also a member of MENSA.

He is survived by his sister, Katherine Barnhart, of New York; his brother, Ron Barnhart, of Kansas; his son, Tom Barnhart and his wife, Sylvia Rombis and children, Alexis (Kevin) Romey and Eric Barnhart; his son, Terry Barnhart and his wife, Helen Lee and children, Fiona and Sarah; and his daughter, LeAnne Coulter and her husband, Jonathan Coulter, son, Alexander and daughter, Cassandra.

Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 305 Sixth St., Traverse City, MI 49684. A remembrance service will be held immediately following the visitation from 3 to 4 p.m., also at the funeral home, where family and friends are invited to share memories and stories.
