Tom Sloan's Obituary
Thomas "Tom" Jay Sloan, 72, of Traverse City passed away August 28, 2021. He was born December 11, 1948 in Tawas City, to parents Jim and Beverly Sloan.
Tom truly valued his time spent with family and was most proud of his daughter, son and three grandchildren. His son-in-law and daughter-in-law were added blessings to the family. An avid fly fisherman and outdoorsman, his deep love of nature began early when he learned to flyfish from his grandfather, and he continued the tradition by passing this knowledge on to his children and grandchildren.
In 1967 Tom attended Ferris State University and met his wife, Donna of almost 51 years. There he ran for both the cross country and track team, spending many nights running long distances well past midnight with his teammates. In 1970 Tom attended Michigan State University and graduated with a mechanical engineering degree. He supported his alma mater by attending many Michigan State football games and basketball games with his family.
Tom's remarkable ability to navigate the woods perfectly, using only his internal compass, was unmatched. Always preferring the path less traveled, Tom spent much of his free time outside exploring, flyfishing, hunting, swimming, kayaking and enjoying nature.
He is survived by his wife Donna; his children Kari (Ed) Belanger, Jeff (Megan) Sloan; grandchildren Sam, Emma and Maycie Belanger; his brother, Jim (Virginia) Sloan; and many extended family members.
A memorial gathering celebrating Tom's life will be held Thursday, September 2, 2021 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM in the garden at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City. Please come as you are and Tom's family kindly asks, for their safety and yours, that guests who are not fully vaccinated wear a mask.
