Velma May Dorsey

Velma May Dorsey, 94, of Empire passed away on October 31, 2022, on her 75th wedding anniversary with her beloved husband Jim and daughter by her side.

Velma was born on February 24, 1928 to the late Archie and Myrtle (Kesser) Anderson in Randolph, Ohio.

On October 31, 1947, Velma married her best friend, James " Jim" Dorsey after meeting him in the Sleeping Bear area. Every night before they turned in for bed, Jim would tell Velma "Goodnight, I love you" and every night she would respond "And I love you very much". Their love story was one for the ages and they would often win the "longest married couple" prize at the Old Settlers Picnic.

Velma was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed quilting. In her younger years she often quilted with other ladies at the Empire town hall. She also was a devoted member of Empire United Methodist Church. Throughout their retirement years, she and Jim liked to travel mostly with friends. They made it as far east as Maine and Prince Edward Island, as far west as Fairbanks, Alaska and the California Red Woods and as far south as the Gulf and parts of Texas with their 5th wheel. She loved to read with her kids and play games with her grandson Matt. Above all else, she will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, son Jim; and her siblings Dale, Thomas, Millie, Gladys and Delores.

Velma is survived by her husband, Jim; their daughter Chris (Duane) Shugart; grandson Matthew (Alicia) Shugart and sister Lois Mitchell.

The memorial service will be held on Friday, November 4, 2022 at 11:00 am at Empire United Methodist Church with visitation beginning one hour prior.
