Obituary

Vernon Rains, age 93, formerly of Davisburg and later Traverse City, died Sunday, December 10, 2023. He was born in Pontiac, MI on November 8, 1930. He graduated from Rochester High School in the class of 1950, where he met the love of his life Lorene "Carol" Rains; they were married in 1951 and enjoyed 72 years of blissful union. He served the US Army during the Korean War as a radio operator while also continuing his pitching prowess for the US Army Baseball team. Vernon was a die maker for Pontiac Motor Division for over 30 years, upon retiring he and Carol moved to the Traverse City area. He was a Past Master of the Austin 48 Masonic Lodge in Davisburg, a former member of the Scottish Rite choir in Detroit, a former member of the Davisburg United Methodist Church and the First Congregational Church of Traverse City. He excelled at many athletic endeavors particularly golf, baseball and bowling, even well into his later years his athletic talents were stellar. He and his wife made great memories together, traveling all over the United States and many parts of the world. He is survived by his; son, Steve (Rhonda) Rains; son-in-law, Todd Richardson; 6 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. Vernon is predeceased by his wife, Lorene "Carol" Rains and daughter, Sue Richardson. A visitation will be held from 5-7 PM Thursday, December 28, 2023 at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
