Virgilene "Virgie" Anna Warren
Virgie Warren, 95 of Traverse City, passed away peacefully at Orchard Creek on October 25, 2024.
Virgie was born on June 17, 1929 in Traverse City to the late Michael Cecil and Clara Mabel (Bates) Burton. She grew up on a cherry farm on Old Mission Peninsula and attended the one room school house. She often recounted how she walked a mile to school each way and was able to skip a grade. When she was just 14, she met a handsome boy named Don who was 17 at Sunset Beach. The two fell in love and their love story lasted over 70 years.
She was quite artistic and won a scholarship to art school in Grand Rapids. She declined the scholarship though as Don was returning from the Navy. Following high school, she worked for an attorney at the state hospital. Don and Virgie married in 1948 and soon welcomed daughter Julie and son Donald B. They lived for a short time in Adrian and then moved to Lansing. She began her career with the State of Michigan and later retired after 30 years. Not ones to sit idle, the two then decided to move to Mt. Pleasant where they started a Duraclean business. They were recognized as award winning dealers for many years. They happily retired again when they sold the business and moved back to Traverse City.
Throughout her life she enjoyed flowers, gardening and crafting. Looking back, some of the best times were shared at Horsehead Lake fishing, boating and water skiing. She loved dressing up for Halloween, sewing outfits for herself and Julie and being creative. She will always be remembered for her happy smile and soft voice.
Virgie was preceded in death by her beloved husband Donald and Son Donald Burton Warren.
Virgie is survived by her daughter Julie and daughter-in-law Paula Warren; Grandson Brian (Tanya) Beach; and Great Granddaughter Amelia Beach.
In accordance with their wishes, they will be laid to rest at the Ogdensburg Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial contributions in her honor may be directed to Hospice of Michigan or Munson Healthcare Foundation
