MAPLE CITY — Walter George Houdek, 77, of Maple City, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011. Walter was born on Saturday, May 5, 1934, to the late Wilbur and Nettie (Olson) Houdek in Leland Township and was raised by his grandmother, Vena Olson, following the death of his mother. He married Alice Ellen Mooney in Davison on June 15, 1962. Walter was retired from the U.S. Air Force. He was then employed in the repair department of Max's Service until he retired from that position. Walter was a very active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Good Harbor. He enjoyed tinkering and fixing things, especially tractors and clocks. He also enjoyed fishing. He is survived by his wife, Alice; his children and grandchildren, Stephen (Mary) Houdek, of Canton, and their children, Lindsay, Andrea and Ryan; Karen (Gerry) Andrews, of The Villages, Fla., and their children, Amanda and Kelby; and Brent Houdek, of The Villages, Fla., and his son, Lauren. Also surviving are his great-granddaughter, Ava; his sister, Evelyn (Leonard) Kropp, of Suttons Bay; and his sister-in-law, Irene Houdek, of San Diego. Walter was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 2901 S. Manitou Trail, Good Harbor, with Pastor Robert Wurst Jr. officiating. Burial will be held in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will take place at the church beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions be directed to St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
