TRAVERSE CITY — Waneta L. Hungerford, 96, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at Culver Meadows Assisted Living.Waneta was born Aug. 21, 1914, in Ennis, Mont., to the late George C. and Iva G. (Thomas) Hungerford. She lived in Elberta as a child, and then moved to Traverse City. Waneta proudly graduated from Traverse City Central High School in 1933. After schooling, she worked for the GT Metal Casket Co. for 26 years, until their closing. She then worked for Cherry Growers for the last 17 years, before retiring.Waneta was a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church since 1942. Also, she was a dedicated life member for over 50 years of both the Order of the Eastern Star #147 and the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem #16. Waneta also volunteered for the Grand Traverse Medical Care Facility Guild Senior Center in Traverse City.She will be sadly missed by her cousins and fondly remembered for her beautiful smile, sense of humor and compassion for others.Surviving Waneta are her cousins, Marie Bankston, of Des Moines, Iowa, Leon (Janice) Thomas, of Frankfort, Lorraine (Robert) Heyboer, of Grand Rapids, Vivian (Ron) DuFresne, of Yorba Linda, Calif., and Thomas W. Thomas, of Elberta.She was preceded in death by her parents; aunts, Marie Thomas and Clora Thomas Bigley; and uncles, Floyd and William Thomas.Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, with visitation one hour prior at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Gilmore Twp. Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be directed to a charity of one's choice.The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City.
