TRAVERSE CITY – Weta L. Thompson, 100, of Traverse City, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2017 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions, surrounded by her beloved family.
Weta was born on Wednesday, January 10, 1917 in Muskegon, the daughter of Hazel Weta (Houck) and Otto David Squire. The family later moved to the Detroit area where Weta graduated from high school in 1935. She married Lloyd Glenn Thompson on Saturday, June 8, 1935 in Traverse City and he preceded her in death on Saturday, March 19, 1983.
A resident of this area for 82 years, Weta had been employed by the Friend of the Court in their office. She had been a member of the Salvation Army, The Eagles Auxiliary where she had served and was a past president, was an avid reader, seamstress and a 10 year member of the Sweet Adelines. Weta loved people and especially loved her family.
She is survived by her children, Robert (Virginia) Thompson of Traverse City, John Thompson and Lloeta (Thermond) Barry, all of Lake Leelanau, 16 grandchildren, and many, many great and great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sons, James and William, her grandsons Donald Dubay and Thomas Thompson as well as her brother Edgar Squire and sister Eleanore Rinkevicz.
Visitation for Weta will begin at 2 p.m. Friday, March 24 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with a memorial service following at 3 p.m, also at the funeral home. Pastor Doyle Berg will officiate. Burial will be in Lake Ann Cemetery at a later date.
