---- — Traverse City — William G. "Willie" Johns Sr., 84, of Traverse City, died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, at his home. Born Dec. 9, 1926, in Traverse City, he was the son of the late Samuel and Nora (Chupp) Johns. On March 31, 1956, in Grand Rapids, he married the former Loretta E. Worm Willie was honorably discharged from the United States Navy after serving during World War II He was formerly employed by Parsons Manufacturing and later retired from the Traverse City Osteopathic Hospital, where he worked in the maintenance department. As his hobbies, Willie enjoyed hunting, fishing, walking and all craft work.He will be fondly remembered as a loving husband, father and family man.He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Loretta E. Johns; daughter, Cindy (Dennis) Mikses; son, William Johns Jr., all of Traverse City; and Vincent (Antoinette) Johns, of Fife Lake; four grandchildren, Vincent, Jessica, Andrew and Russell; two great-grandchildren, Payton and Lily; siblings, Emma Maleski, George (Linda) Johns, of Portland, Maine, and Sandra Carson, of Marietta, Ga.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Mack Johns, Betty VanZee, Mary Kirkby, Gerald Johns, Arlene Chouinard and baby Ruby.Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, with visitation one hour prior to the service, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Pastor Bruce Bequette will serve as the celebrant. Full military honors will follow under the auspices of the V.F.W. Cherryland Post #2780. Cremation has taken place.In remembrance of Willie, memorials may be directed to The Salvation Army or to the local Parkinson's Support Group. Envelopes may be obtained at the funeral home.
