TRAVERSE CITY - William "Bill" Richard Linebaugh, 90, of Traverse City, passed away
surrounded by his loving family on December 18, 2015. Bill was born on April 10, 1925 in
Detroit to his parents the late Park and Elsie (Livingston) Linebaugh.
Bill enlisted and proudly served his country as a Naval Medical Corpsman in the U.S. Marine
Corp 4th Division, on Iwo Jima, Saipan, and Tinian Islands. He married Marjorie Ann (McElwee)
on June 18, 1949 at Kirk in the Hills Presbyterian Church in Bloomfield Hills. The couple had
five children together and lived in Detroit, Southfield, Fowlerville, Evart and Traverse City.
Bill earned a BA Degree in Economics and MA Degree in Education from Michigan State
University and was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He was employed in sales
and purchasing for J.L. Hudson and Ford Motor Co., and along with owning and running a dairy
farm, Bill was a Junior and Senior High School teacher for fifteen years in the Fowlerville
School District. During his last fifteen years of teaching Bill was a professor at Ferris State
University in Big Rapids Michigan.
He loved farming, golfing, the Detroit Tigers, cooking, woodworking, singing at church and as
a member of the Traverse City barbershop. Bill was an accomplished speaker and story teller,
loved listening to all kinds of music but particularly the big bands. He loved sailing, telling
jokes, and fishing. He was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church.
Bill is survived by his wife, Marjorie Ann Linebaugh of Traverse City; children, Karl (Cindy)
Linebaugh of Big Rapids, Sue (Chuck) Chapel of Fenton, Marshall Linebaugh of Vicksburg and
friend Andie Lowinski of Webberville, Melodie Linebaugh and Pam Osborn of Buckley, Amy
(Craig) Wilber of Evart; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 sister-in-law's, Margaret
Linebaugh and Jeanne McElwee.
Bill was preceded in death by brothers and sister-in-law's David and Barbara Linebaugh,
Robert and Dorothy Linebaugh, and Phillip Linebaugh; brother-in-law Richard McElwee.
Per Bill's wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in the spring of
2016.
