Obituary

Willoughby "Willie" Phend
21 September 1939 – 31 March 2026

With her sharp wit, independent spirit, thoughtfulness, and a lifelong love for a good Frank Sinatra tune, Willie passed away peacefully at the age of 86 in Traverse City, Michigan. A woman who navigated the world with both professional empathy and personal flair, she leaves behind a legacy of curiosity and connection.

Born in Muncie, Indiana, Willie completed her bachelor's degree at Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio. After graduation, she traded the rolling hills of the Midwest for the bright lights of New York City. Those years as a young professional in the city remained some of her most cherished memories—a time of independence, great friendships, and the vibrant energy of the 1960s.

She came back to Indiana to complete her master's in psychology at Ball State University and in 1973, Willie began a new chapter when she married her husband, Harold "Woody" Phend. Together, they embarked on a life's journey that took them across the country.

As a therapist for university counseling services, she dedicated her career to guiding students through the complexities of young adulthood. Her work took her to Berkley, Chicago, and Des Moines.

She had a natural affinity for young people, finding their energy infectious and their potential inspiring. Even after transitioning from clinical work, she remained a fixture in the Des Moines community, spending many years as a welcoming presence in the leasing office at 3000 Grand.

Willie loved fine art, fashion, travel, wine, cheese, good conversation, jazz, and of course…her loving cat companions – of which there were many over the years!

In 2023, Willie moved to Traverse City, Michigan, to be closer to her family. She found a true home and a vibrant "second family" at Meadow Valley Assisted Living. Her family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the Meadow Valley staff for their exceptional care, humor, and genuine affection, which made her final years so joyful.

Willie was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Faye Fensel, her brother, Charles Jr., and her husband, Woody. She is survived by her stepchildren Tracy, Cindy, Laura, and Matt, along with 12 grandchildren and many other friends and family.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you play your favorite Sinatra record and raise a glass to a life well-lived.
