TRAVERSE CITY — Winfred Meereis Killman, 90, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 31, 2011, at Cherry Hill Haven in Traverse City.Wynn was born Dec. 8, 1920, in Traverse City, to the late Amiel and Emma (Meereis) Killman. He spent his childhood years at the family home on Madison Street, where he met many of those who would become his lifelong friends. He graduated from Traverse City High School, attended Olivet College, and later enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force.After being honorably discharged, Wynn returned home to Traverse City and built a career around his passion for carpentry. He effortlessly became a skilled craftsman, taking great pride in his workmanship.Wynn married Esther, his wife of almost 57 years, on July 29, 1952. They built their home on Long Lake Peninsula and together raised three children, Katherine (David) Handke, of Merton, Wis.; Beverly (Steven) Killman-Krellwitz, of Cedar; and Forrest (Laura) Killman, of Copemish. They have six grandchildren, Christopher and Michelle Handke, Cody and Jennifer Krellwitz and Sara and Melissa Killman.Wynn enjoyed sailing, raising exotic ducks, tending his rose garden, and spending as much time outdoors as possible. His immense love of animals led him to care for many creatures over the years. In his more than 20 years of retirement, he and Esther traveled the entire United States and spent many winters in Florida. His friendly nature endeared him to everyone he met.Wynn was preceded in death by his wife, Esther; brother, Arlie; sister, Frances; son, Forrest; and son-in-law, Steve.Private funeral arrangements have been made and interment will take place at Oakwood Cemetery at a later date.The family wishes to thank the Cherry Hill Haven Memory Care Home for the loving and dedicated care they provided their father over the past three years, and to Hospice of Michigan for the compassionate care they provided.Memorial contributions may be directed to The Alzheimer's Association or AC PAW.Please share thoughts with the family at Wynn's online guest book at
