Winifred A. Young

Winifred A. Young, 94, of Traverse City, passed away on April 3, 2016. She was born on June 23, 1921 in Philadelphia, to the late John and Evelyn (Drew) Meighan. She was married to Robert W. Young on January 17, 1942 in Hillsdale, MI. He predeceased her in 1994.
Winifred earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education. She taught many special need students at the Matheny School for Cerebral Palsy in Peapack, New Jersey. She also was a teacher for the "Literacy Volunteers of America" and for the Dearborn Township #8 Public Schools.
Winnie was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church in East Lansing, Pi Beta Phi Alumni Association and American Association of University Women, and she was a President of American Cancer Society in Dearborn. Winnie had a passion for politics, sport events, the Arts, reading, bookbinding, traveling and exploring world culture. She also enjoyed volunteering her time as a "Pink Lady" at several hospitals.
Winifred is survived by her children; a son, John "Randy" Young, two daughters, Truda (William) Fagan and Mary MacGowan; her grandchildren; Jessica (George Smith) Young, Nicole Young, Brandon (Jodi) Young, Tara Fagan, Conor (Kelsey Bell) Fagan, Joshua (Sara Paddock) Breckman, Rachel (Brian) Lemon, Julie (Timothy) Sussman and great-grandchildren; Willie, Hiku, Aidyn, Amelia, Oscar, Lucy, Miles, Benjamin and a great-granddaughter and two great-grandsons on the way. Also surviving are Paula Young and Andy Breckman.
She was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters; John Meighan, Martha Penrod and Evelyn Houlahan.
A funeral service honoring Winifred will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home 305 Sixth St., Traverse City, MI 49684, with visiting one hour prior. Rev. Ron White will officiate. A reception will follow.
Burial will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 11, 2016 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsdale, MI.
